Ask Yourself These Questions:
1. Are you often occupied with fears and concerns about the well being and safety of the person who is drinking or using drugs?
2. Do you feel a nagging guilt as if somehow you are to blame or should be able to stop the person’s addiction?
3. Do you often argue with the person about his or her drinking or drug use?
4. Do you suffer from insomnia, headaches, fatigue, nervousness, or loss of appetite?
5. Are you spending less time on hobbies and friends and more time caring for the person who is drinking or using drugs?
6. Are you living from one crisis to the next since noticing the excessive drinking or discovering the person’s drug use?
7. Do you compensate for the person’s behavior by taking on his or her responsibilities, paying his or her overdue bills and fines, and calling his or her employer to make excuses for absences?
8. Have you had financial difficulties since the person started drinking too much or using drugs?
9. Do you feel like you are always begging and pleading with the person to get help?
10. Do you want to learn how to get some relief from the pain the relationship is causing without ending the relationship altogether?
